Natural Disorder
Combining my paintings and ceramics as a body of single work is almost an organic process for me these days.
Usually, my large butcher’s bench heaves under the weight of tin buckets of fresh blooms, or if time permits, arranged in a collection of vases I scored from my late Mum or collected myself. And to be honest I’m not sure if in my process, the ceramics morph from the paintings or the paintings morph from the ceramics.
It’s all a natural disorder! … or disaster.
Hence how the name came about for this collection. Natural Disorder.
I like to mix it up in my studio practice as a rule. I tend to get bored easily and feel I have struck a good balance for me. I usually have 2-3 paintings on the go and a couple of unfinished ceramics sitting patiently in a corner, waiting for my eager hands to press a bit more love to them. Balancing out my attack on the canvas or the clay kind of stops me from overworking each piece. This is a common problem with artists apparently. Comforting to know…
And as I work away surrounded by these stunning, abundant, loose and weathered blooms, I’m immensely drawn to their very own individual, resilient, natural disorder.
Finding the common space. The common thread. And creating that delicious rich tapestry in my work.
I hope you enjoy it. It’s created with love.
